Content revised 20 October 2026.

Keyword stuffing means repeating words or phrases mainly to influence rankings. It makes a page harder to read without giving the visitor a better answer.

What keyword stuffing looks like

Imagine a service page that repeats the same service-and-city phrase in almost every sentence. The words may match a search query, but the repetition does not explain the service, the process or why someone should choose it. Lists of unrelated locations, hidden text and promotional phrases packed into image alternatives are other warning signs.

There is no safe keyword-density target

A fixed percentage cannot tell you whether a page is helpful. Google’s spam guidance describes keyword stuffing in terms of unnatural repetition and attempts to manipulate rankings. Aim for a useful answer instead of trying to hit a density score. A keyword tool can help organise topics, but its score is not Google’s verdict on the page.

Where your main topic should be clear

  • Use a descriptive page title and one clear main heading.
  • Explain the actual service, product or question near the beginning.
  • Use section headings to organise the decisions a reader needs to make.
  • Add related terminology when it explains the subject naturally.
  • Link to relevant supporting pages with descriptive, readable anchors.

Edit without losing valuable search topics

Keep a record of important queries and the page that should answer each one. Read the copy aloud and remove repeated claims that add nothing. Replace a vague sentence with a useful detail: the service area, the deliverable, what the customer should prepare or how the process works. You can preserve the subject without repeating every exact phrase.

Check what changed

Compare the final page with the original before publishing. Confirm that useful information, working links, media and enquiry options remain. After release, review Search Console queries and relevant enquiries over a suitable period. Changes in traffic have several possible causes; a copy edit does not guarantee an immediate ranking improvement. For a website-specific review, explore our SEO services.
