Content revised 21 October 2026.

Site-search measurement can show the terms visitors try on your website. Verify the search implementation before relying on a report of popular queries.

Inspect how search works

Check whether the search term appears in a URL parameter or is handled another way. GA4 enhanced measurement supports site-search events under its documented conditions. A custom implementation may require additional work.

Use a safe test

Search for a non-sensitive sample term and inspect the resulting event and parameter. Confirm that the term is recorded once and associated with the expected journey. Avoid sending personal information typed into a search field.

Interpret failed demand carefully

A common query may indicate interest, confusion or an item visitors cannot locate. Review results and the destination before adding a new product or article. Search counts alone do not establish purchase intent.

Connect findings with repairs

Improve labels, catalogue records or empty-result help where the evidence supports it. Important pages still need navigation and links. Internal search is a customer aid, not the only route for discovering the site.

Official guidance: GA4 enhanced measurement.
