Content revised 21 October 2026.
A useful link strategy starts with the audience and a reason to reference your work. Link count alone does not establish qualified visitors or business leads.
Give the publisher a reason
Create an accurate resource, example or original explanation that helps the publisher’s readers. Outreach should explain that relevance. A generic request for authority is less useful than a specific contribution.
Review each opportunity
Check the audience, actual placement and commercial relationship. Relevant directories, contributions and partnerships have different purposes. Do not copy a competitor’s backlinks without understanding why they exist.
Keep relationships transparent
Document payments or sponsorships and use appropriate link qualification. Avoid automated comments, forum drops and programmes designed mainly to pass ranking credit.
Measure discovery and suitability
Track relevant referral activity where available and assess whether enquiries match the offer. A placement can have publicity value without proving a search-ranking effect. There is no fixed number of links that guarantees a lead target.
