Content revised 21 October 2026.
A theme’s demo speed is only a starting point. Test your actual pages, media and functions before choosing or replacing a WordPress theme.
Use your own requirements
List the service, article, product or enquiry pages the website needs. Include navigation, original video, forms and useful content. A lightweight empty demo may behave very differently after the features and assets required by your business are added.
Test representative pages
Compare the loading and interaction experience under similar conditions. Check a first visit and a repeat visit, desktop and mobile. Look for delayed controls and layout shifts as well as the initial display. Record the setup so results can be compared fairly.
Review more than the score
- Readable typography and accessible navigation.
- Useful image handling and responsive layouts.
- Compatibility with the required plugins.
- Maintenance, licensing and handover responsibilities.
Treat old theme rankings as historical
The earlier version of this article named Avada, Newspaper and Pillar in a 2018 list. Those names are not a current speed ranking or purchasing recommendation. Versions, configuration and project requirements change. Evaluate any candidate’s current documentation and your own test build before committing.
Protect the existing site during a switch
Inventory URLs, content, media, widgets and integrations. Review them in staging and plan a rollback. Switching themes should not quietly remove the mobile video or break a quote form in pursuit of a higher score. Choose the implementation that meets the brief and can be maintained.
