Content revised 21 October 2026.

Starting a business is not suitable for every person or situation, but age alone does not determine an idea’s value. A young person needs appropriate support and realistic responsibilities.

Begin with a manageable task

A supervised learning project can teach planning, communication and basic record keeping without a large investment. Protect education, time and wellbeing. Do not frame ordinary setbacks as proof of personal failure.

Check the rules and support

Account, contract and payment requirements vary by platform and jurisdiction. For example, Fiverr has specific parent or guardian rules for eligible minors and does not permit users under 13. Use the current rules rather than disguising age or identity.

Keep commitments realistic

A responsible adult should help review customer promises, spending and data handling where appropriate. Friendship and collaboration can coexist with clear responsibilities. There is no universal reason every child should or should not run a business.

Official guidance: Fiverr minor participation rules.
