What are Regular Expressions in Google Analytics?
A regular expression also called as regex can be described as a string of characters that creates some kind of search pattern. This feature of Google Analytics is similar to the wildcard that is used for the purposeful filtering of a different kind of information. As compared to wildcard, regular expressions provide you the flexibility of using more than one special characters in the search filters. With this feature of Google Analytics, you get full control of the searching pattern and it helps you to optimize the data of your search results in an organized way.
Characters used in Regular Expressions
Here are some characters listed down that actually make a valid and useful regular expression for search filtering. Let’s have a look at them:
Caret (^)
This character is used to symbolize the starting of a line. When you use caret in the process of filtering search terms, it provides you with all the instances where your required information is present in a page.
Dollar ($)
This sign of regular expression indicates that the ending of a line. When you filter search terms by placing dollar at the end, it brings all the instances within a page where the required word is the last term.
Vertical Pipe (|)
This sign signifies the word “Or”.
